No, an eclipse is not an emergency

Niagara Region in Ontario has declared a state of emergency because of the eclipse!! This is a real abuse of the legislation they declared an emergency under, the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act.

If we allow declarations of emergency for things like tourism associated with the eclipse, municipalities will try declaring emergencies for all kinds of social issues. Just imagine what a government would do if they used their emergency powers for a “climate emergency”!

The good news is that Ontario Premier Doug Ford can RESCIND Niagara’s illegal declaration of emergency to stop these performative declarations before they get out of control. He has the power to do this.
