And the Municipal Muzzle Award goes to...

Find out who takes the prize in our free report exposing Canada's most censorious bylaws

We’re naming and shaming.

Local governments across Canada are increasingly regulating what residents can say, display, and protest. And it’s completely unconstitutional.

Many of these restrictions are vague, sweeping, and totally subjective. In some municipalities, residents can face penalties simply because someone considers their expression offensive, disrespectful, emotionally harmful, or politically controversial. Others give local officials broad discretion to decide which viewpoints belong in public life and which do not.

The Canadian Constitution Foundation created the Municipal Muzzle Award last year to expose Canada’s growing culture of municipal censorship and identify the country’s worst free expression violators.

This year’s accompanying report, Canada’s Most Censorious Bylaws, reveals how quickly these restrictions are spreading across Canada and why we all must remain vigilant and be prepared to push back when politicians attempt to silence us.

Which municipalities are Canada's worst offenders against free expression? Is your town or city one of them?
