TORONTO – The Canadian Constitution Foundation (CCF), the nation’s leading civil liberties charity, continues to expand its legal capacity and is pleased to welcome Bronwyn Eyre as Senior Counsel, beginning in mid-October.

Eyre brings extensive legal, legislative, and public policy experience to the CCF. A lawyer and former journalist, she was elected to the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly in 2016 and served in several senior cabinet roles, including as Saskatchewan’s Minister of Justice and Attorney General. In that role, she was responsible for the province’s justice system and represented Saskatchewan on major constitutional and federalism issues.

“I have long admired the Canadian Constitution Foundation’s principled commitment to defending constitutional freedoms and the rule of law,” said Eyre. “I am delighted to join its outstanding legal team and contribute my experience to the important work of holding governments accountable and defending the rights of Canadians.”

Eyre’s areas of interest include federalism and the constitutional division of powers, freedom of expression and religion, administrative law and judicial review, and the relationship between international law and Canada’s domestic constitutional framework. She is also interested in emerging civil liberties issues involving universities, professional regulators, government institutions and online expression, as well as questions concerning property rights, freedom of association and the appropriate limits of government authority. 

“Having served at the highest levels of government, she brings a rare understanding of how governments make decisions, how they exercise their power, and where they can be challenged,” said Van Geyn. “That perspective will be a powerful addition to the CCF’s legal team.”

As Senior Counsel, Eyre will work alongside the CCF’s legal team on strategic constitutional litigation and help expand the organization’s capacity to challenge government overreach and defend fundamental freedoms.

Eyre joins the CCF at an important moment of growth, as the organization expands its capacity to take on more constitutional cases across the country. To help seize that opportunity, a generous CCF donor has offered to match every donation made this September, up to $100,000, helping fund new casework that Eyre and the CCF’s expanded legal team will take on.
