COVID travel ban considered by Supreme Court: Was it a win for freedom?

In this video, CCF Executive Director Christine Van Geyn breaks down the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in Taylor v Newfoundland and Labrador, which reviewed whether Newfoundland’s COVID-19 travel ban was constitutional after Kimberley Taylor was prevented from attending her mother’s funeral in May of 2020. In the end, the Court ruled that the ban did violate Canadians’ mobility rights under Section 6 of the Charter, but found the violation justified under Section 1, while affirming a broad right to interprovincial travel does exist. Still confused? Watch the video where Christine walks through the decision step by step.
