Stop Regulator Censorship

For posting about current events online, a British Columbia realtor received a three-page letter of warning from the provincial regulator.

Corbin Chivers is a realtor in Langley, British Columbia who expressed his opinions about political issues on social media, as he is perfectly entitled to do in a free country.

In December 2025 and May 2026, Corbin posted videos commenting on Indigenous land claims and the decision to close Joffre Lakes Provincial Park to non-Indigenous visitors.

Neither post concerned his clients or his work as a realtor.

But in June 2026, he received a warning letter from the BC Financial Services Authority advising him that his posts supposedly “fell below the required professional standard” established by B.C.’s Real Estate Services Act. The message was clear: continuing to speak about these matters could put Corbin’s professional standing at risk.

Regulators must not be allowed to dictate what licensees say outside the job. What started with Jordan Peterson is now spreading through professions across Canada.

The Canadian Constitution Foundation is fighting back.

The CCF is demanding the BCFSA rescind the letter of warning and remove it from Corbin’s file. If the BCFSA refuses, the CCF is prepared to go to court.

Professional regulators are subject to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and cannot censor political speech just because they deem it controversial or polarizing. We must make clear that Canadians do not surrender their free speech rights when they choose a career.
