UPDATE: B.C. Premier Backs Down on Bill 7

VANCOUVER – The Canadian Constitution Foundation (CCF) is pleased that British Columbia Premier David Eby has announced that he intends to remove antidemocratic provisions from Bill 7, the Economic Stabilization (Tariff Response) Act, following advocacy led by the CCF and other stakeholders.

On March 18, 2025, the CCF sent a letter to Premier Eby and Attorney General Niki Sharma raising serious concerns about Part 4 of the bill, which would have granted cabinet sweeping powers to amend laws without legislative debate or votes, bypassing democratic oversight. The CCF called the provision a “cynical power grab” and urged Premier Eby and Attorney General Sharma to reconsider.

CCF Counsel Josh Dehaas said that this attempted overreach demonstrates why constant vigilance is necessary.

We will continue to monitor this bill closely to ensure any revised version respects the democratic process,” Dehaas added.

The CCF remains steadfast in its commitment to protect Canada’s constitutional rights and freedoms and will be closely watching the developments of this bill.
