In the latest video, Christine Van Geyn examines Bill C-34, the so-called “Social Media Safety Act,” and its proposed expansion of federal oversight over social media platforms and artificial intelligence in Canada. The bill would establish a Digital Safety Commission with broad authority to enforce removal of “harmful content” and require age verification for users under 16.
The proposed legislation would chill lawful expression and lead to overly cautious AI systems and online platforms, ultimately shifting control over public discourse away from citizens and toward unelected regulators and private companies.
